Operations Manager - Freight Forwarding

Our client are a global player from supply to distribution, at both local and international level. They provide global and integrated management and optimization of the logistics chain for its customers. The group combines high quality and efficiency with responsible management across its logistics activities.

Due to expansion our client is now looking for an experienced Multi-Modal Air and Sea Freight (Import and Export) Manager to run the team at their Manchester Branch

Essential or preferred qualifications :

Preferred Level CO Aviation/Dangerous Goods
Essential or preferred experience
- Satisfactory 5-year background checks/Eligibility to work in the UK
- Essential Min 3 years experience in a managerial operational freight forwarding role, with a minimum of 3 years varied experience in an operational environment.
- Extensive experience in air and ocean tender process for local, national and global business
- Minimum 5 years import/export customs clearance experience.
- ASM Sequoia customs software knowledge preferable.
- Operational experience of the day to day handling of all modes air and sea import and exports within the UK
- In depth experience of liner negotiations to maximize margins whilst staying competitive.

Key skills/in-depth knowledge requirements :
- Knowledge of UK customs requirements essential with sound understanding of procedure codes.
- Knowledge of the customs tariff as well as being up to date with recent UK HMRC rules and regulations required.

Role, Responsibilities and Contribution:
Proactively support the team with the day to day running of the department, including but not limited to:
- Understand all activity relating to ocean and air freight customer
- Managing the day to day running of the department, overseeing operational processes whilst closely monitoring service level and compliance, providing assistance with operational duties where necessary
- To communicate with all departments via email, telephone and face to face working in a proactive manner
- Maintain solid relationships with all suppliers and seek out alternatives/new opportunities
- Manage and maintain relationships with ocean and airline partners, managing the selection, negotiation and booking process
- Ensuring that all we meet our internal SLA and also the expectations of our customers
- Ensure that customers are kept fully up to date with the movement of their freight as required
- Continually reviewing process and procedures with the view to improve efficiencies and profitability
- Coordinate the team to ensure that the department is fully supported with a compliment of skill sets
- Ensure that the team understand any changes to customer requirements and implement any core changes within the department
- Run and maintain daily reports for external distribution and internal use, maintain a firm grasp of the departments activity and profitability
- Understand all costs and tariffs for each customer
- Maintain close relationship with key service providers ensuring cost and service agreements are to the required level of expectation and that their processes and service levels are frequently audited.
- Maximising profits and minimising costs, suggesting new and improved ways of working including: tender processes, rate collation (Suppliers)/analysis and streamlining of department processes and procedures/managing staff performance
- Manage individuals performance in line with the company expectation, mentoring, developing and stretching team to maximum potential, whilst managing dips in performance in line with HR advice
- Motivate the team including mentoring/regular, monthly team meetings advising team on performance of the department, input from team (Brainstorming) relating to improvements, direction of department, streamlining processes
- Monthly Business Report: overview of the performance of the department following month end, highlighting highs and lows, profit and loss, customer feedback on current service level, insurance claims.
- Developing and directing the department: through new initiatives, and expanding to modes/products/services/packaging and areas not already covered by the branch
- Compliance ensuring the department is compliant with all regulations/guidelines specific to GDP/DfT/AEO/ISO/H&S/Employment Law and IJS in-house processes and procedures
- Ad-hoc duties as and when required from time to time by management

Health and Safety Responsibilities
- You must take responsibility for your own safety
- Apply and enforce Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental regulations and processes on a day to day basis
- Make sure where you work is safe and hazard free
- Report ALL accidents and near misses to your Line Manager, however insignificant they may seem
- You have a legal responsibility to work with Management to identify hazards and reduce risk as much as possible in the work place
- Ensures risk assessments are completed and implements control measures where necessary
- Ensures accident and near miss forms are completed within 24 hours and completes investigations for all lost time incidents
- Completing walk the floor inspections and fire safety checks
- If necessary, instigate disciplinary procedures in relation to breaches of H&S standards by way of reporting to HR
- Provide positive health and safety leadership
- Ensure all staff within the area of responsibility, have received the required health and safety training to fulfil their role. Allocate adequate resources to enable timely health and safety training to take place
- Agree specific health and safety objectives with teams, reviewing KPIs and health and safety performance regularly (H&S Meetings)
- Implement action plans and track progress as well as liaise with the health and safety team to ensure legal compliance
